Merrick was a technician with a brilliant career only a few years ago, but left all that behind when a strange piece of cybernetic technology from the outer rim came into his employer’s possession. The artifact, apparently some kind of communication device, blends its technological and organic components so seamlessly that it’s hard to say where cells end and machines begin. Although Merrick was unable to get away with the artifact, he followed rumors and astrophysical charts, tracing it back to a region known as the Enigma Sector. Reports of strange spatial anomalies suggested that a theoretical phenomenon called “soft space” may be a reality there. If true, the near-overlap of cosmic membranes may make unimagined advances in hyperspace travel possible. This search led Merrick to Glon Kalmat, a fringe mining colony built into five asteroids bound together by duranium scaffolding. The cantina there was a familiar stop for refugees and scoundrels.

At Glon Kalmat, Merrick first met his future companions Asha, Tsillin Voore, C-45, and Torrin Korr, as they all dealt with B’nox Veet’s sudden assassination of Captain Vartang and the subsequent decompression it inflicted on the cantina.
